TRINITY

Zarex’s face remains impassive and my pulse races as his eyes remain fixed on me.

Grez gives a harsh laugh. “Human females are poisonous to Vraxens.” He side-glances me. Shit. Shit. Shit. “Are they not?”

“No.” Devos looks at me in confusion. “They are not.”

“You have fucked your sol? Spilled your seed?” asks Zarex, breaking his silence in a hoarse voice as he stares at me.

“Yes, or I would not have the mark.”

Tears prick my eyes as I mouth ‘I’m sorry’ to Zarex, still unable to read his expression. His eyes haven’t become midnight blue, instead they’re a lighter purple than they were.

“She lied, Zarex,” says Grez with triumph. “Trinity is not your sol. Your sol would not lie to you.”

Everyone gathered looks on with a mixture of curiosity and surprise, and I wait for Zarex to speak but he doesn’t.

“This situation means nothing,” says the alien beside Devos. “We want the female. Then you can have Zarex.”

“Or?” asks Grez. “You will not kill him if you want to survive.”

“And you will give us the female if you want to survive,” says Devos stonily. “Trinity. Come.”

What do I do? My aching heart tells me to stay with Zarex, but I don’t know what he might do to me. Yet I also don’t know whether to trust these aliens who tell me they have my friends. Are they voluntarily at the aliens’ compound?
